Medical Treatment
Employees that require medical treatment for a work-related injury should immediately choose on treating doctor to coordinate medical care. To ensure timely payment for work-related medical bills, health care providers must be informed that any medical bills from work-related injuries should be sent directly to The University of Texas System Workers' Compensation Insurance (WCI) office.
Health Care Provider
Health care providers can obtain information regarding pre-authorized services, required reports and invoices from The Medical Review Division of The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC) at 512.440.3513.
What if I need medical care using a different doctor?
Except in an emergency, an employee must receive medical care for a work-related injury with their treating physician. If an employee receives medical care outside of their treating physician, the employee may be responsible for payment of any charges associated with that care.
What is the process of changing a treating doctor?
If an employee must change their treating physician for a work-related injury, an Employee's Request to Change Treating Doctor Form DWC-53 must be submitted to and approved by The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers' Compensation (DWC).
While a workers' compensation claim is pending, a WCI claims adjuster may have an employee evaluated by a physician. Such an evaluation will be done to determine if an employee is disabled due to work-related injury and/or if an employee has sustained any permanent disability due to the injury. If WCI requests an employee to be evaluated by a physician, the employee will be given at least a ten day notice prior to the appointment.
