Business Applications

Most departments rely in some way on database applications or other technology to make their business processes more efficient. These may be small Access databases used by a few people or large complex applications that support other campuses. The analysts in OTIS can assist you with:

  • Evaluating Technical Approaches
There are many possible solutions to a given problem. Our analysts can help you evaluate alternatives and make appropriate choices. Working with OTIS will also help ensure that your solution meets the technical and security requirements and standards of UT System.
  • Process Improvement
While you're evaluating technical solutions is an ideal time to also map out the flow of your business processes and look for places where it can be improved. OTIS analysts have experience with analyzing workflows and processes and can aid you in this process.
  • Requirements Definition
The most critical part of choosing a technology solution is a clear definition of your needs, from both a business and technical perspective. Our analysts are trained to help you examine your business processes and translate them into technical requirements.

  • Selecting and Working with Vendors
If you decide to purchase a software application or service, you must contact OTIS so that we can work with your vendor on technical specifications and requirements. This will prevent you from purchasing an application that does not work in our environment or does not meet our standards. The OTIS Director reviews all technology contracts for use within System Administration.
  • Developing New Applications. Purchasing software that already exists is often the best choice, but there are cases where a custom built application is the appropriate solution. OTIS developers can design and build custom solutions and database applications to meet your needs. However, because we have limited resources, we are sometimes booked several months in advance and may not be able to meet every request. We accept projects on a first-come, first-served basis and apply basic project management principals to schedule projects and deliver them on time.
