Direct Publishing of Web Documents

UT System Administration employees who have been authorized by their department head may publish documents directly to the UT System Administration web site. This method is recommended for those employees who publish and manage large numbers of web documents.

Follow this procedure:

• Review the UT System Information Resources Use and Security Policy
• Review the UT System Information Resources Security Operations Manual
• Review the document University Liability for the Wrongful Acts of Publishers.
• Review the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. All pages must be at least Priority 1 accessible.
• Have your department head authorize you for direct web publishing by completing the WWW Publishing Authorization Form. (It must be completed and forwarded to the Office of Technology and Information Services.)
• Compose your document using the HTML formatting codes or Macromedia DreamWeaver. If you need assistance setting your site up in DreamWeaver, call the Support Desk (4357) or you can follow these instructions on Configuring your site in DreamWeaver.
• Save your document in HTML (text) format on the development server (http://wwwdev.utsystem.edu). This server can only be accessed by computers on the UT System network. Your department's default page should be saved as Homepage.htm.
• Test the document by viewing it in Firefox and Internet Explorer.
• Revise and retest the document as needed.
• Publish the document to the UT System production web server (http://www.utsystem.edu). Upon doing this, the document is immediately published to the public.

Note: Always make changes and create new documents and applications on the development server first and then move them to the production server. This provides an opportunity to test your documents for errors and coding problems before putting them into production. Errors make our site look bad and coding problems can cause the server to quit serving pages.
