The implementation of common rules and regulations has long been advocated to ease the regulatory burden on universities and provide a consistent approach to research misconduct.
In response, the U.S. Office of Research Integrity (ORI) provides guidance by promulgating its own model or sample policies on research misconduct and by approving institutional policies for use throughout a university system like ours.
However, in June, 2005, the regulations that form the basis for such policies underwent substantial revision. As a result, all our approved policies are now out of date. The ORI has posted a sample policy and procedures on their website that complies with the PHS Policies on Research Misconduct (42 CFR Part 93) entitled Sample Policy and Procedures for Responding to Allegations of Research Misconduct. ORI has also posted a Preamble entitled Updated ORI Sample Policy and Procedures for Responding to Allegations of Research Misconduct which provides background and commentary on ORI’s most recent sample policy.
The University of Texas member institutions have three HOP Policy options to choose from to assist in addressing allegations of research misconduct:
