INSTITUTIONAL NOMINATION DEADLINE: DECEMBER 15, 2006


The Chancellor's Entrepreneurship and Innovation Awards Program was established to recognize researchers who exemplify ingenuity, creativity, and innovation in research. This prestigious award acknowledges commercialized or commercializable research that has the potential to yield a profound impact on the citizens of Texas and on all of society.

 

Awards. Any employee of any UT System institution is eligible for nomination, including single institution and cross-institutional collaborative teams. Collaborative teams will share the award funds. Award funds will be distributed during an official recognition, complete with press release and media availability. 

 

One award will be distributed in each of the following categories:

 

Research and innovation developed at a single institution.

Award Amount = $10,000

 

Research and innovation involving multiple institutions.

Award amount = $15,000

 

Nominations Process. University presidents or their designee may submit one nomination per UT System component for each award category listed above. Nominations packets for each award will include:

  • A description of the candidate or team’s innovation, including accomplishments and impact upon or benefit to society (3 pages or less),
  • A vita (per individual or team member) including the candidate’s education, experience, awards and distinctions, patents and publications, copyrights and trademarks, external funding history, and invited lectures and conferences,
  • One letter of nomination (per individual or team) explaining the nominator’s affiliation with the candidate or team and why the candidate or team is deserving of the award,
  • One letter of endorsement (per individual or team) submitted by the President of the institution or his or her designee. In the case of award category II, each President or his or her designee should submit a letter of support, and
  • Additional documentation not to exceed 5 pages (per individual or team member).

Selection Process. Candidates will be selected based on (1) creativity and innovation, (2) application and commercialization potential of research, and (3) significance and impact of research. Recommendations for awardees are made by a Selection Committee comprised of five members: 2 UT System institution faculty or administrators and 3 non-UT System members. After the initial award year, at least one of the five members will be a previous award winner appointed by the Vice Chancellor for Research and Technology Transfer. The Selection Committee recommends award winners to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Technology Transfer.

 

Continuing Program Participation. Past awardees may be asked to engage in mentoring of other researchers, such as an Entrepreneurial Lecture Series each year or a simple list of Entrepreneurial Experts as a resource. The Office of Research and Technology will hold an Entrepreneurship and Innovation Conference to invite all awardees to share new ideas, network, and meet industry representatives.

 

Submission Instructions. Submit all 5 elements of the nomination packet electronically by December 15, 2006, to RTT@utsystem.edu.

  • September 18, 2006 : Nomination instructions distributed
  • December 15, 2006 : Nomination packets due to RTT@utsystem.edu from President or designee.
  • January 2007: Selection Committee chooses awardees in Categories I and II.
  • February 27, 2007 : All nominees honored and award recipients announced at the UT System Research and Technology Transfer Showcase.
