The University of Texas System Student Advisory Council was established in 1989 to provide advice on a variety of student issues. The first meeting of the Student Advisory Council was in February 1990.
The Student Advisory Council consists of two student representatives from each U.T. System component institution enrolling students and meets three times a year, usually in Austin, Texas. The Council provides input to the U.T. System Board of Regents working through and with the Chancellor and U.T. System Administration on issues of student concern. The guidelines require that recommendations have multi-component focus and that individual campus issues be explored with component administrators prior to any consideration by the Council. Administrative support and assistance are provided to the Council by U.T. System. The Council is supported through U.T. System budget allocations.
The Student Advisory Council may appear before the U.T. System Board of Regents on specific issues and provides an annual update of activities to the Board of Regents. In addition, the Student Advisory Council may be asked to send representatives to various system-wide task forces or focus groups. The Student Advisory Council Executive Committee also meets with the U.T. System Board members annually.
