Serving the educational and health care needs of Texans for more than 125 years, The University of Texas System is one of the nation's largest higher education systems, with nine academic campuses and six health institutions. Today, the UT System is responsible for educating more than 205,000 students and awards more than two-thirds of all health-related degrees from public health institutions in Texas. One out of every three degrees at a public university is awarded by UT System. The UT System works to ensure Texas students have access to unparalleled educational opportunities that allow them to thrive and grow; provides world-class health care that enables Texas residents to live longer, healthier lives; and advances innovative research that leads to groundbreaking discoveries and cures.

Legislative Priorities

  • As the final 2012-2013 state budget is developed, ensure that the share of spending on higher education is not reduced further.

  • As additional resources are made available for the budget, commit proportionate additional funding to higher education consistent with its value as a strategic investment of state resources that will help continue to improve lives and build the Texas economy.

  • Grant maximum flexibility to university systems and institutions to manage the impacts of any budget reductions.

  • Provide university systems with appropriate flexibility to administer institutions with efficiency and productivity in a reduced budget environment, including eliminating or sunsetting reporting and regulatory burdens.
