Austin Area Phone Calls

Please make note of the following information about changes to the way telephone calls from campus phones to the local Austin calling area are placed.

Effective June 1, 2013, all local Austin area phone calls must be placed using 10-digit numbers (area code plus 7-digit number). This is due to a new area code being introduced in the greater Austin area by the Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC). On June 1, anyone dialing the local Austin area from a System phone with only 7-digits will receive an error recording asking them to try their call again. Four-digit dialing is not affected. Ten-digit dialing to local Austin numbers is available for use now.

Additional information may be found in the PUC notice:

Faculty and staff are encouraged to prepare for this change now by ensuring all their printed and online materials contain 10-digit local numbers, as well as updating any 7-digit numbers on directories of devices they use.
