Communities in Exile: Antinomies of Displacement
Post-Doctoral Fellowships

Term: Academic Year 2001-2002, The University of California, Berkeley
Amount: $35,000/Year Plus Benefits

Funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, "Community in Contention: is a three-year program of research funded by the Institute of International Studies, the Human Rights Center, and the Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities. The project intends to explore the meanings and uses of, and prospects for, the idea of community in its social, political, and cultural expressions at the end of the twentieth century. Each year of the project will be organized around a broad theme and will support two post-doctoral fellowships (one year in duration).

Applications are welcome from the social sciences, humanities, and legal, helath and human rights fields. Regional, comparative, and interdisciplinary interests are especially welcome. In addition to ther individual writing andn research, fellows will participate in seminars, conferences and other activities relevant to the overall themes of the project. Ford Foundation Fellowships for Minorities

Approximately 60 predoctoral, 40 dissertation, and 30 postdoctoral fellowships sponsored by the Ford Foundation and administered by the National Research Council.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen or national
  • Native American Indian, Mexican American/Chicana/Chicano, Alaska Native (Eskimo or Aleut), Native Pacific Islander (Polynesian or Micronesian), Black/African American, or Puerto Rican
  • Planning a career in teaching and research at the college or university level

Stipends and Allowances:

  • Predoctoral - $16,000 to the fellow, institutional allowance of $7,500 for three years
  • Dissertation - $24,000 for one year
  • Postdoctoral - $35,000 for one year, $3,000 travel and relocation allowance, $2,000 cost-of-research allowance, $2,500 employing institution allowance, to be matched by employing institution

  • Predoctoral: November 19, 2001
  • Dissertation: December 3, 2001
  • Postdoctoral: January 7, 2002

University of Southern California Rossier School of Education
Admission Deadline: December 15, 2001

The Rossier School of Education is inviting applications and nominations for admission to the Ph.D. program. The School's primary mission is to redefine excellence in urban education. Diversity in the educational experience plays a central role in the USC graduate program.

Ten qualified Ph.D. applicants will receive a research, teaching, or graduate assistantship and/or scholarship ranging from $16,000 to $35,000 per year. Ph.D. applicants must demonstrate research interests that are consistent with the Rossier Schoolo's urban mission. Emphasis are available in: Counseling Psychology, Policy and Administration, and Learning and Instruction.

Faculty Scholars Awards
The William T. Grant Foundation awards up to $250,000 ($50,000 annually for 5 years) to each of five post doctoral scholars from diverse disciplines to conduct research in three areas:

  • Original research on youth development
  • Evaluations and analyses of programs, policies, laws, and systems affecting young people
  • Original research on adult attitudes about and perceptions of young people, and on the consequences of those attitudes and perceptions.
