Program Overview

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) offers this 36-credit hour, non-thesis Master's in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Bilingual Education in a convenient, flexible online format designed for working teachers. 

The Master's in Bilingual Education program at UTEP includes 12-credit hours of Professional Development courses as well as 24-credit hours of Bilingual Education Concentration coursework. 

Spanish language proficiency is not required to purse this degree, but students may find that a basic understanding of the language is helpful in some courses.

Through the Master's in Bilingual Education program, students will gain practical and in-demand skills such:

  • A deeper appreciation of and sensitivity to other cultures
  • The ability to address the special needs and skills of English language learners and help students from different cultures in the classroom
  • The skills to translate pedagogy into concrete strategies
  • The level of knowledge needed to be eligible for increasingly senior administrative positions

Types of positions graduates can expect to hold include:

  • Bilingual education teacher (all levels)
  • Two-way immersion teacher
  • English language teacher
  • Adult literacy, GED and ESL teacher

Many MEd in Curriculum and Instruction - Bilingual Education courses are open to cross-campus enrollment. Check with your academic advisor prior to registering for any of these courses to ensure that they apply toward your degree program.
