UT System, Brookings Institution to Host Conference on Health Homes

AUSTIN – The University of Texas System and the Brookings Institution will co-host a conference on the subject of health homes for children and for adults with chronic illness on March 22 – 23, in Austin. The conference, which is open to members of the news media, will take place at the UT Austin Commons Learning Center, J.J. Pickle Research campus, 10100 Burnet Road, in building #137.

The topic of health homes as an integrated and coordinated care delivery model has been gaining attention during the current healthcare reform debate. The conference is part of the initiative, “For the Health of Texas,” an effort to improve the health of Texas by exploring the frontier of healthcare delivery. Subsequent conferences will address improving the quality of perinatal care and improving emergency room performance.

The keynote address will feature Dr. Allen Dobson, Jr., vice president for clinical practice for Carolinas Healthcare System. Dobson is credited with developing the nationally recognized “Community Care of North Carolina” Medicaid managed care program. Dr. Kenneth I. Shine, executive vice chancellor for health affairs in the UT System, and Mark Zezza, Ph.D., research director for the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform at the Brookings Institution, will open the conference.

Workshop topics include health home design and implementation, evidence-based care, care coordination and health information technology.

The conference agenda is available online.

Other sponsors of the conference are the UT Austin Center for Health and Social Policy at the LBJ School of Public Affairs, the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University, the Texas Medical Association, the Texas Hospital Association, the Texas Nurses Association and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
