Awardees, Fellows Named at Clinical Safety & Effectiveness Conference

AUSTIN – Five health professionals from three institutions in The University of Texas System were recognized for their efforts to improve clinical safety and effectiveness during an awards ceremony here on Thursday (Nov. 4).

The three winning entries received the 2010 UT System Clinical Safety and Effectiveness Award during the program's second annual conference.

The winning projects and the principals associated with them were:

  • Impact of a process flow tool on wait times from the emergency department to the ICU; Pratik Doshi, M.D., UT Health Science Center at Houston
  • Successful Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP) prevention program in a comprehensive cancer center surgical ICU; Joseph L. Nates, M.D., Roy F. Chemaly, M.D., and Mary Lou Warren, R.N., UT MD Anderson Cancer Center
  • Reducing avoidable harm in the MICU; Eleanor Phelps, R.N., UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas

Additionally, three new fellows were inducted into the program:

Margaret Bell, M.P.H, R.N., UT MD Anderson Cancer Center; Shawn L Ralston, M.D., UT Health Science Center at San Antonio; and W. Gary Reed, M.D., F.A.C.P., UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

The purpose of the conference is to promote and share best practices associated with clinical safety and effectiveness.
