On the Tragedy in Orlando

Main page content

This morning, we awoke to the news of the horrific mass shooting in Orlando. I want to extend my personal condolences to all those who have been affected by this incomprehensible tragedy.

Once again, a barbarian with a perverted ideology and a corrupt sense of right and wrong took the lives of innocent people. He assaulted that which we hold most dear in this nation — our freedom. Our freedom to be who we are. Our freedom to gather with our friends. Our freedom from harm and persecution. Our freedom to live life to its fullest.

But like those cowards that came before him in Ft. Hood, Boston and San Bernardino, he has failed. His despicable actions only reinforce our resolve to be more inclusive, more caring, and more understanding.

As a Texan who spent many years in Florida, my thanks goes out to all those magnificent law enforcement officers and first responders who acted so heroically in the crucial hours of this crisis. More than most, I appreciate the professionalism and courage it takes to act in the face of an active shooter.

To those in the LGBTQ community in Florida, Texas and throughout the nation, please know that I stand with you against all who might threaten your freedoms, or those of your fellow Americans. This nation was built on the principle that all of us are created equal. No amount of small-minded bigotry, no amount of radical ideology and no amount of hatred will ever change that. The truth is indestructible. My thoughts and prayers are, and will remain, with all of you.
