CPRIT awards over $43 million to UT institutions to fight cancer

UT institutions were awarded over $43 million in the latest round of grants from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas, or CPRIT, to advance Texas’ fight against cancer.

Collectively, seven UT institutions will receive more than $43 million of the $114 million in statewide awards recently announced by CPRIT.

The following UT institutions received awards for academic research, prevention initiatives, and to attract world-class cancer researchers to Texas:

  • UT Southwestern – $15,149,989
  • UT MD Anderson – $10,020,672
  • UT Austin – $2,753,625
  • UTMB – $4,243,131
  • UT Health San Antonio – $10,348,627
  • UTHealth – $499,794
  • UT San Antonio – $250,000

CPRIT was established after Texas voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2007 authorizing the state to issue $3 billion in bonds to fund groundbreaking cancer research and prevention programs and services. In November 2019, Texas voters approved a constitutional amendment to provide an additional $3 billion to CPRIT for a total $6 billion investment in cancer research and prevention.

To date, CPRIT has provided $2.6 billion to support research and programs that benefit Texans in every area of the state. Of that, more than $1.3 billion has been awarded to UT institutions.
