Sean Griffin, JD, MPAff

Sean Griffin serves as the Deputy Vice Chancellor and Chief of Staff in the Office of Health Affairs at The University of Texas System, providing strategic and operational support to executive leadership and helping to oversee the functions of the Office in support of UT System’s eight academic medical campuses. This includes oversight of the UT Center at Laredo, a System-led multi-institution teaching center that hosts health-related academic and research programs delivered by UT System institutions. He also serves as the primary liaison for Health Affairs to the UT System Board Office, Office of General Counsel Health Affairs Team, Office of Academic Affairs, and various other UT System and institution departments. Prior to this role, Sean also served the UT System in the Office of Governmental Relations focusing on health-related issues, where he secured appropriations of more than $60 million for research and academic programs across the state,  led the transformation of a regional satellite campus to the aforementioned UT Center at Laredo, and helped shape countless legislative efforts to the benefit of the UT System and its institutions. 

Before joining UT System, Sean worked for more than a decade inside and around the Texas Capitol crafting and implementing policy and securing appropriations. He served in various roles within the Legislature, including as a legislative aide, policy director, deputy chief of staff, and chief of staff. In these capacities, he led policy teams and directly oversaw the passage of more than 350 pieces of legislation. 

He was the Founding Principal of SG Governmental Relations, a state and local government consulting and lobbying firm, where he advised clients in higher education and business and occupational regulatory issues. Sean holds B.A. (Philosophy) and B.S. (Psychology) degrees from Texas A&M University, an M.P.Aff. from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, and a J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law. 

He is a member of the Health Law and Legislative and Campaign Law sections of the Texas Bar.
