Event Description

This workshop will provide participants with an expanded knowledge base in gift and estate planning, as we explore advanced topics including estate and income tax law, gift planning vehicles such as charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts, blended gifts and gifts of complex assets, estate and gift administration, reporting testamentary commitments and realized planned gifts, and using technology and analytics to increase new testamentary commitments. This one-day training will include a mix of presentation, case studies, and panel discussion to achieve objectives including:

  • Strategic Prospecting for Testamentary Gifts: How can we maximize our limited resources to most effectively identify prospects? What methods can we use to allow prospects to “self-identify”? What role can technology and analytics play? How can we do a better job of prospecting among current and retired faculty and staff?
  • Beyond the Will: What do we need to know about gift planning vehicles (charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable lead trusts)? What are the types of assets donors can use to make gifts, both during and after their lifetimes? What are the benefits to the donor and the institution of making a gift of assets such as real estate or mineral interests? Why would a donor be better off giving certain assets to us and other assets to their family?
  • Planned Gift Commitments, Before-and-After: What paperwork is required to document planned gifts? Who tracks new gift commitments, UT System Gift Planning Services or the institutions? What happens when a donor passes away and a gift is realized? How do we accurately report new gift commitments and realized gifts on the VSE report?
