I believe that the subjects that fascinate me — politics, poverty, Latin America — are important and complicated issues.

I insist that my students embrace complexity when they take on such subjects, and that they realize that whatever they think a solution might be, someone is going to disagree with them. In my classes I do not provide solutions; the best I can do is to try to show them how to think about complex issues.
