Teaching is a process of helping students open doors to worlds that they did not know existed, and then to make connections between what they have discovered and the world they already know.
Experiential learning is a hallmark of my teaching philosophy. I strive to provide opportunities for students to gain hands-on experiences through experimentation in the classroom setting, undergraduate research training in my laboratory, field trips in both traditional courses and research, and student organizations. I often include field trips in my courses, whether it is a two-hour long outing to the local desalinization plant or a more extended field trip to a local state park.
