Most of my UT teaching takes a live, flexible, and interactive form. Every aspect of a course is linked to larger purposes.
I have found that University of Texas students respond well to a high-expectation, high-intensity approach—provided that the structures and rationales that lie behind a course are always part of the conversation. Once students have considered the why behind the what, and see what excellence in a given endeavor looks like (as compared to work that is merely adequate), they take responsibility for their own performance, and along with it their own process of learning.
