2018 Sponsorship Workshop - Developing Future Women Leaders in The UT System

Background

Research has substantiated that the complex challenges facing general academic and academic health institutions today and beyond are best addressed through diversity and inclusion being among core leadership values and practices. Despite the past decade increases in the percentages of women among higher education graduates and faculty members, women remain under-represented in U.S. academia’s highest-level executive positions, known as the “C-suite.” The University of Texas System is no exception, having generally lower numbers of women in top leadership positions in both the health and general academic components.

The corporate world has initiated ‘sponsorship programs’ designed to accelerate the careers of emerging leaders, and some of these programs target the development of women as leaders. Successful corporate world sponsorship programs are among the models for sponsorship programs to launch new leaders in academia, including women leaders.

The Workshop targets female faculty members and administrative and professional staff who are recognized to have the potential and drive to become senior leaders across The UT System (protégées). Matched with senior leaders from their institutions (sponsors), protégées will leave the Sponsorship Workshop with new knowledge, skills and career plan ideas to accelerate their path to executive leadership. Sponsors will leave with complementary knowledge and skills for sponsoring protégées into top positions at their institutions.
