Assistant Vice Chancellor & Managing Counsel, Health Law Section

Victoria Cantu is Assistant Vice Chancellor and Managing Counsel for the Health Law Section.  Health Law is responsible for the day-to-day operation of The University of Texas System Professional Medical Liability Plan, a statutorily-authorized, self-funded medical malpractice plan providing coverage to UT health care providers as well as medical and dental students.  Health Law also provides legal advice on operational, regulatory, and transactional matters to UT Health-related institutions and UT System. 

Victoria has practiced law in-house, at private law firms, and in government.  Immediately prior to joining OGC she served as in-house counsel for Abbott Laboratories for a number of years, most recently as a Divisional Vice President and Associate General Counsel.  She specialized at different times in transactional matters and litigation.  As a law firm principal at McKool Smith, she litigated complex cases before federal and state courts in Texas and throughout the United States.  As a United States Army Judge Advocate, she had the privilege of representing soldiers in administrative proceedings, and the Army in Courts-Martial.  While serving as a JAG, Victoria was appointed Chief of the Military Law Branch for the Army Medical Department Center and School.  Following her service as a JAG and prior to entering private practice, she was a law clerk to the Honorable Sim Lake in the Southern District of Texas. 

Victoria received her Bachelor of Arts Degree Summa Cum Laude from the University of Houston, and her JD with High Honors from The University of Texas School of Law.  She has co-authored several articles related to litigation and was selected as a Texas Rising Star in 2009 and 2010.
