Developmental Education Corequisite Capacity Building

The Developmental Education Corequisite Capacity Building (DECCB) Initiative was launched by the University of Texas System in Fall 2023 in response to a sharp post pandemic increase in the number of students placed into English and mathematics corequisites. The initiative also addresses longstanding student success gaps, as data showed that students placed into developmental education experience lower persistence and graduation outcomes, highlighting the importance of strengthening how corequisites are designed and delivered systemwide.

Guided by a Systemwide Steering Committee and supported by faculty Communities of Practice, DECCB was designed to build shared understanding, strengthen institutional capacity, and advance high-quality corequisite implementation across UT institutions. Early work included a comprehensive landscape scan, combining student-level data with faculty and staff input to identify patterns, disparities, and opportunities for improvement across UT System.

Building on this foundation, DECCB advances its work through aligned efforts in policy and institutional practice and professional learning. Central to the initiative are the Principles of Excellence for Implementing Corequisites in English and Mathematics, which synthesize research and System learning into clear guidance for institutions and faculty. Ongoing work includes faculty led communities of practice, the development of scalable professional learning resources, and an upcoming webinar series that will highlight findings from the landscape scan, elevate promising practices, and support continued cross institutional collaboration in service of student success.
