As a retired employee, the way your UT SELECT Medical Insurance works will vary depending on you and your dependents' Medicare eligibility and your (the retired employee's) employment status. You and your dependents must enroll in Medicare when eligible.

Visit Medicare.gov to learn more about eligibility, when and how to enroll, and to complete your Medicare enrollment, when eligible.

Telemedicine

UT SELECT telemedicine visits will remain a plan benefit with an applicable copay. However, effective September 1, 2021, telemedicine benefits will cover services consistent with and determined by CMS and the American Medical Association (AMA) as clinically appropriate for telemedicine. BCBSTX providers are aware of the CMS and AMA service guidelines. Members may contact BCBSTX Customer Service at (866) 882-2034 with any questions.

For UT Retired Employees who Return to Work in a Benefits-Eligible Position at a UT Institution:

  • If you (or one of your dependents) is Medicare eligible, UT SELECT will be your primary insurance and work much the same as that of a regular active employee only with a secondary insurance through Medicare.

  • If you and your dependents are not Medicare-eligible, your UT SELECT Medical plan works the same for you as it does for a regular active employee.

For Retired Employees no longer employed at UT in a benefits-eligible position:

  • If you (or one of your dependents) is Medicare eligible, UT SELECT Medical insurance will assume that you and any of your Medicare-eligible dependents are enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B regardless of your actual enrollment in Medicare. It is very important that you are enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B if you are eligible for it and your UT insurance is not through active employment. Please see the section on UT SELECT and Medicare for Retired Employees.

  • If you and your dependents are not Medicare-eligible, your UT SELECT Medical plan works the same for you as it does a regular active employee.

UT SELECT also provides Prescription Drug Coverage administered by Express Scripts.

The UT SELECT Medical Plan is a self-funded medical PPO plan administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, a Division of Health Care Services Corporation, a Mutual Legal Reserve Company, an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.

If you are planning your retirement, please see the Getting Ready to Retire section of this website.
